Looking for a name for a fictional character
Character names should suggest backstory before page one. Specific is better than poetic.
- Use the wrong name on purpose ruleA character named Henry who hates being called Henry tells you everything.
- Use a regional name ruleTells the reader where they're from without saying.
- Use a generation marker ruleKaren reads young or old depending on era.
- Avoid alliteration in protagonists rulePeter Parker works. Marcus Mason doesn't.
